For years I DJ'd using vinyl, I like to think this gave me a better ear for mixing, being far more 'hands on'. These days it seems anyone can be a DJ if they own a laptop and some illegally downloaded software, but so far I've yet to be impressed with laptop DJing, its cold, very rarely flows well, and the mixing is usually bad, maybe there's something to be said for having no choice for years but to use vinyl, it taught me to think about timing, and how tracks flowed together.
By the mid nineties CD's had all but taken over, and I was forced to stop using vinyl as bands simply weren't releasing material in that format anymore. The vinyl I'd used for years sat on a shelf, gathering dust while I slowly replaced it with CD's or burnt it to MP3. Well, I've finished that now, and I need the space, so I'm selling it at an Alternative Bring and Buy sale tomorrow.
I should feel sad about this, its my DJing history going cheap, but truth be told I need the space, and the money, and I'd rather someone owned it that would appreciate the warmer tones that vinyl offers, complete with pops, clicks and crackles. I hope the new owner treats it well, its been around and would have some great stories to tell if it could...
